The Nines Hotel
Certified LEED Silver
The Nines Hotel showcases environmentally progressive strategies in a building on the National Register of Historic Places. The Meier & Frank department store had been a Portland landmark since 1908, and Starwood Hotels & Resorts wanted to pay homage to its legacy of elegance while incorporating modern technologies for sustainability. The building increased energy efficiency while maintaining historic integrity by sealing the original windows, using a guestroom heat exhaust energy recovery system and installing high efficiency chillers and boilers.
Three quarters of the original building was reused despite extensive asbestos and lead remediation, 86% of construction waste was diverted from landfills, a total of 22 million pounds, and 40% of renovation materials contained recycled content. The hotelís site offers guests unparalleled access to almost every bus, Light Rail and Street Car line in Portlandís public transportation system, as well as bicycle and pedestrian networks.
