The East Portland Community Center
Certified LEED Platinum
The East Portland Community Center achieved LEED Platinum certification while adding a 22,000 square foot aquatic facility addition to the existing, 12 year-old community center. The new addition features a pool, staff offices and community spaces, and pursued a series of creative strategies to stretch its tight budget: heat recovered from the air within the building is used to heat pool water and advanced water filtration systems and low flow fixtures cut potable water use by half, saving almost two million gallons per year. The building’s roof hosts an 87 kilowatt photovoltaic array that integrates with the electrical supply for the Center, providing 17% of its power needs. The EPCC proves that even small buildings can realize large financial and environmental resource savings with intelligent, integrated design.
